We Hear: Next-Gen Ford Mustang SVO, Focus RS to Share 2.3-liter Turbo-Four

The Ford Mustang and Ford Focus RS seemingly don’t have a lot in common. One’s a rear-drive, all-American muscle car, while the other’s a front-drive, European hot hatch. If the latest rumors are true, the Ford family might be growing ever closer. According to Top Gear, the 2015 Ford Focus RS will be powered by a 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4, which it’ll share with the long-rumored 2015 Ford Mustang SVO.
According to Top Gear, the 2015 Ford Focus RS hasn’t officially been given the green light yet, though engineers at Ford’s Team RS know exactly what they want. What they want is at least 320-hp driving the front wheels from a turbocharged 2.3-liter I-4. Ford Global Performance Vehicle chief Jost Capito told us back in 2010 that the return of the Focus RS, “depends on a lot of factors;†chief among them being a sound business case.
That’s where the 2015 Ford Mustang comes into play. We’ve already reported that a revival of the SVO moniker may be in the works for the 2015 Mustang. Using an EcoBoost mill, the 2015 Mustang SVO would produce between 250-hp and 300-hp from an engine based on the 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4, with displacement likely boosted to 2.3-liters (as in the original SVO). This would allow it to compete directly with cars like the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, without stepping on the toes of it V-6 and V-8-powered big brothers, or the Focus RS.
Top Gear reports that the 2015 Focus RS would use the same EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 from the 2015 Mustang SVO. Top Gear says that the engine would get an added boost under the hood of the 2015 Focus RS, bringing power up to the 320-plus-horsepower realm that RS engineers want out of the new hot hatch Focus RS.
Though many enthusiasts may cry foul over the lack of all-wheel drive, that’s being done to save money. Ford could conceivably use the 2013 Escape’s all-wheel drive system since it shares its chassis with the Focus, but it reportedly won’t fit under a Focus RS without severely modifying the car’s floor plan. And besides, as Top Gear points out, Capito was never too keen on an all-wheel drive system on the Focus RS, saying that it added too much cost and weight to the car.
Instead, Top Gear reports that the 2015 Focus RS will revive the previous RS’ trick RevoKnuckle front suspension, allowing it to effectively put its power down without the torque steer that plagues many high-power front-drive hot hatches.
On paper the Focus RS and Mustang SVO couldn’t be further opposites, but if sharing a new turbocharged four-banger brings them closer, we welcome it with open arms.
