New Owen's turbo'ed BTCC Focus launched

The Ford Motor Company launched its new ‘Global’ Focus at this week's Geneva Motor Show, just weeks before the car makes its international competition bow at the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season opener at Brands Hatch on 3 April. As with all the turbocharged BTCC cars in 2011, it will be powered by a special motorsport turbocharged produced by Owen Developments.
Ford’s ‘Global’ technical support initiative is designed to create one common race car, enabling private teams from the world’s touring car series’ to efficiently tailor Ford competition cars to various specifications.
Having clinched last year’s Independent Teams’ and Drivers’ titles with Tom Chilton - again, using an Owen Developments turbo - Team Aon will spearhead the programme by running the first ever touring car based on Ford’s all-new Focus model in the BTCC.
Team Aon boss Mike Earle told btcc.net: “At Arena, we’re very pleased to be involved with the Ford ‘global’ technical initiative and to be chosen to provide technical support for the development of Ford’s global race cars.
“We’ve been testing the 2.0-litre turbocharged unit in last year’s car recently. From what we have learnt about that and with our knowledge of the new Focus, we are confident that we will be competitive straight out of the blocks in 2011.â€
Jost Capito, director of Ford Global Performance Vehicles and Business Development, added: “This new BTCC Focus is the first result of a collaborative effort between Ford and race teams around the world that have already built and raced successful Focus race cars.â€
Following a successful 2010 campaign with LPG-powered engines Team Aon will this year make the switch to 2.0-litre petrol turbocharged Ford units built to BTCC series organiser TOCA’s new Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC) regulations using the mandatory Owen Developments turbocharger.
Capito said: “The Team Aon car typifies the flexible approach possible in this programme, as its specification includes running in the 2011 season with a turbocharged 2.0-litre port-fuelled Ford engine to meet current local regulations.â€
With 226 wins under its belt, Ford is by far the most successful manufacturer in BTCC history and it will be looking to add to its already bulging trophy cabinet in 2011.
While Team Aon have committed to running the new car, Airwaves Racing will field at least two 2010-spec ex-Arena Focus STs for Mat Jackson and Liam Griffin in this year’s championship.
Commenting on the announcement, Lee Owen said 'We're delighted to see the new BTCC Focus being unveiled as it's the first 'big' car launch under the NGTC rules that require the use of an Owen Developments turbocharger.
